For the last four Easter Good Fridays we make our way over to our neighbours' Easter Egg decorating potluck making it feel to me these days like the true hallmark of spring officially in the air.
Our neighbours are close enough we walk over safely and happily as a tribe but far enough that it still feels like a bit of a risky adventure. Especially when night begins to enclose in on us as we embark on our journey home after dinner.
Ukrainian Easter egg decorating happens at this get together and for the weeks leading up to Good Friday our whole family's got their egg-shaped thinking caps on commiserating what will adorn our eggs this year.
I felt compelled this year to commemorate the newest addition to our family, our mini dachsund puppy Angel, similarly to how Craig did a baby foot print on his egg the year Kale was born. The eggs are decorated with yolk intact and soon I'll be blowing them empty and hanging them on the Easter tree. Next year.
As a side note the Easter Tree did not happen yet as planed due to life excitement in so many other areas. Namely, the turbo torso number you see wrapping around my creation up there.
To make up for the lack of said tree I let the kids to go ahead and eat a whole, entire chocolate bunny to themselves for the first time in their lives for last night's dessert.
Mind you said bunnies were only about two inches tall. But still, Kale had yet to experience such a caffeine indulgence before (other than when in utero. And during his after latte nursings for his first three years) and was up singing Hot Cross Buns in bed until 3 in the morning.
And the point of the story my little egg is trying to tell. .. this here is the true source of all these magical Easter eggs delivered worldwide to children everywhere.
The muses made me do it.
I asked a fellow pot lucker if she thought that last touch was maybe a little too much. Perhaps even a little weird. She replied that it wasn't like me to be doing something weird.
I think I dected a tinch of Easter sarcasm in her voice.

Happy Easter! Our friends find themselves with some fresh goat kids that we got to bottle feed again like last year. Does the cuteness ever stop?!?? And speaking of kids, cute and not stopping, here's a bonus song from mine sung while wearing his 'motorcycle suit' :)

We named him Angel and he's living up to the name (for the most part).
When Kale was born it took us about two months to come up with a name that befitted his deliciousness, hardiness and astounishing nutritional value to the soul. But for those two months I was hounding Craig (ha, ha) that we should name hime "Angel". But Craig said no because a) it's his turn to name a kid and b) growing up with such a name might cause too much pressure on him to feel compelled to become a professional baseball player. So I did what I do. I pouted.
I pouted and vowed one day, oh yes, one day, I will have a miniature daschund named Angel. Or a at least a Newfoundland.
I did a lot of research into the breed and then into breeders and found one who has a cult like following and holds the genetic fixings for some celebrity status pups. I told her I wanted the world's chillest little hot dog and she suggested picking from an upcoming litter composed from a love match of a really laid-back duo and so we waited for that one.
I told Edie my idea of Angel for a name for the puppy and she insisted that the puppy has to be white in order for the name to be legit. I thought it would be pretty slim chance that a white puppy would happen considering that mama was pitch black and the dada was black and tan. In a litter of six, five of them pretty much black, a little cream guy was born - eeks! Angel!
I called the breeder at eight in the morning screaming "I'll take the cream!" and she was kind enough to appease me. And he is fitting in really smoothly too. Happy little guy. But then I realized my mentor, Goddess Leonie, has a pup named Angel too. Coincidence? Or am I just one step closer to my cult member status. Want to join me in the Goddess circle? The final phase of membership, after finding yourself a cream or white puppy and naming it Angel, is the forehead tatoo but you can do what I did and just get your family members to promise to stop you before it gets to that point.

We've come a long way in our relationship with our divine bovine, Miss Daisy. It took us a while to get comfortable with each other and to figure out a routine that works but I think we have it down pat!
Right now we leave her with her baby, Meatballs, together throughout the day (she's practicing attachment parenting with him) and then we separate them at night (not very AP that part now that I think of it) so we only have to milk her once a day and have the option to skip it all together if Craig's out of town or are busy with something else in the morning.
It's a beautiful part of my morning routine this milking time. I squeeze it in right after my morning latte and getting some blogging action in. I get the feeling she loves morning coffee breath!
Off to hit publish and get my milking ensemble on and give Daisy a squeeze or two!

We got Barney as a Winter Solstice surprise for Edie when she was just wee. Look at how cute and little he used to be! I feel kind of bad I was slow to bond with him I think due to my heartbreak of losing my soul cat a few years prior (Miss Kitty! at almost 19) but he squeezed his super poofy self into my heart over the years. He really is the coolest cat around.
Sigh. Look how cute and little he use to be! Now look at him...
HONK! He's the epitomy of the gentle giant though ~ a sweet big boy. He's one of those dog/cats. He let's the kids awkwardly lug him from their bed to his special pink chair, follows us around wherever we go outside, asks to be let out to go pee (no litter box - yay!) and knows that I'm the alpha alpha around these parts (just takes a raise of my right eyebrow (I call it my "Rock" look) and he jumps off the couch. Pronto. Good boy.).
So when Sally Feller approached me about taking part in her Knit Your Own Cat book blog tour the first thought that entered my head was whoa, Barney would take up a lot of skeins. Lucky for me, Sally gifted me a copy of her book that helps fund the Barney yarn and was also kind enough to include a copy of the book to give to one of my readers. That could be you! Just leave a comment below saying what critter you wish you could knit up if you could. For example, I wish I could knit a Dexter cow due to my love for all things Miss Daisy. See? Easy! By the way, Sally also wrote a book called Knit Your Own Dog that may be of some of fun to those of you who wish you could knit up your pooch and/or are obssessed with weiner dogs like me.

Edited to add: I forgot to mention I have a guest post over at Homespun Waldorf today! I'm participating in the Winter Carnival this month. There will be much seasonal radiance going over there as many Waldorf-inspired mamas share their winter celebrations and insights over the month of February.

You might notice a split second at the end of the video where you can faintly hear the little wheels in my head turning. I remember now the second my mama anetdote I wanted to share:
The first time my mom met Edie was when she was a month old - right at the prime of her nighttime fusiness. Craig and I were like: "so.... what are you suppose to do when this happens?"
My mom grabbed Edie and started walking around with her and lo and behold, Edie settled impressively quick. "Kahhhh-tee (imagine me doing my mom impression), babies are like horses. They can smell your fear".
So that kind of nicely ties up the whole cow/puppy/kid/gentle disciplining/fear smelling flavour of the vlog entry for this week. Enjoy!

Apparently, I've always been drawn to cows. This picture was taken when I was about ten or so (dig the satin shorts?) at the Calgary Zoo (at least I'm sure that's a cow). I'd like to thank Kelsey for the question about cow having. I forgot to answer her question on how we found out about the breed. Funny thing is it's kind of blog love related. Catherine of Catherine et les fees fame blew me a way with a visit to our land and planted the Dexter cow seed in my brains. My other friend, Pegs, always told me to hold out for a 'mini-moo' so we can ship them in together from Saskatchewan so we can throw them into the hatchback of our cars and have them over for playdates but I googled, and googled and I still don't know what she's talking about.
But the Dexter fits the bill for smaller cow, hardy in cold temperatures and dual purpose. Not to mention sweet tempered. At least I think that's a Dexter thing. Daisy's seriously the sweetest!
